Bishkek is a fairly compact city, and most visitors will find themselves spending time around Ala-Too Square, Erkindik Boulevard and the surrounding cafe scene. During my visit, I stayed in two different types of accommodation.
Freelander Hostel & Coworking
For my first few nights in Bishkek I stayed at Freelander Hostel & Coworking, which was one of my favourite stays in Central Asia. The combination of accommodation, coworking space and community made it particularly appealing as a solo traveller and remote worker. I chose to stay in a private room but they also have dorms making it super backpacker/ budget friendly! They also offered organised day trips and family style meals together, it was a beautiful introduction to the country and where I first tried Kymyz – fermented horse milk!
Grand Hotel
Later I stayed at the Grand Hotel. It was comfortable, affordable and within easy reach of the city’s main attractions. If you’re looking for a private room with hotel-style amenities while exploring the city, it’s a solid option.
My Recommendations
While I only stayed in two properties during my time in Bishkek, I spent plenty of time researching accommodation options before my trip and exploring different parts of the city once I arrived. If I were visiting again, I’d still choose to stay somewhere central near Manas Avenue, Ala-Too Square and Erkindik Boulevard. This area offers easy access to the city’s best cafes, restaurants and attractions, while making it simple to organise day trips to places like Ala Archa National Park.
🏠Budget / Social Stay: Freelander Hostel & Coworking (where I stayed)
🏨 Mid-Range Hotel: Grand Hotel Bishkek (where I stayed)
✨ Luxury Hotel: Orion Hotel Bishkek, Sheraton Bishkek (I visited the IWA Roof Bar & Restaurant here)
🛏️ Other Popular Options: Novotel Bishkek City Center, Plaza Hotel Bishkek, Ambassador Hotel Bishkek
Final Thoughts on Bishkek
While Bishkek is often treated as a stopover on the way to Kyrgyzstan’s mountains, I think it’s worth slowing down and spending a few days here. Between wandering Osh Bazaar, drinking coffee at local cafes, exploring the city’s Soviet history and escaping to Ala Archa National Park, it offers a great introduction to the country before heading further afield.
