Kyrgyzstan was one of my biggest travel surprises!
With snow-capped mountains, alpine lakes, yurt camps and some of the friendliest people I’ve met while travelling, it quickly became one of my favourite countries in Central Asia.
I visited Kyrgyzstan as part of a group tour, but after travelling through the country, I genuinely think it’s a destination that’s very manageable to explore independently, with hiring a car/ driver. Unlike many popular tourist destinations, Kyrgyzstan still has a relaxed, adventurous feel where you don’t need to plan every detail months in advance.
If you’re visiting Kyrgyzstan for the first time, this is the route I would personally recommend.
Kyrgyzstan Itinerary Overview
Day 1-2: Bishkek
Day 3: Chon Kemin Valley
Day 4-5: Song Kul Lake
Day 6-7: Issyk Kul Lake
Day 8-9: Karakol
Day 10: Return to Bishkek
If you have longer, continue into Kazakhstan via Charyn Canyon and finish in Almaty!
Days 1-2: Explore Bishkek
Most international visitors arrive in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan’s capital city.

While many travellers rush through Bishkek on their way to the mountains, I think it’s worth spending at least a couple of days here. It’s a surprisingly leafy city filled with Soviet-era architecture, local markets, cafes and wide boulevards.

Some highlights include:
- Ala-Too Square
- Osh Bazaar
- Panfilov Park
- Victory Square
- State History Museum
- Local coffee shops and restaurants
One of the best day trips from Bishkek is Ala Archa National Park, located just 40 minutes from the city.
If Kyrgyzstan’s mountain scenery is what drew you here, Ala Archa is the perfect introduction. The park is home to dramatic alpine landscapes, rushing rivers and hiking trails that wind through the Tian Shan Mountains. Even if you’re not planning any major treks during your trip, it’s well worth spending half a day exploring the valley.

Bishkek is also the perfect place to organise transport, stock up on supplies and get your first taste of Kyrgyz hospitality before heading into the countryside.
Day 3: Burana Tower & Chon Kemin Valley
After leaving Bishkek, make a stop at Burana Tower, one of Kyrgyzstan’s most important historical landmarks.
Built between the 10th and 11th centuries, the tower is all that remains of the ancient city of Balasagun, once an important stop along the Silk Road. You can still climb to the top for views across the surrounding countryside and explore the small archaeological site nearby.
From Burana Tower, continue east into Chon Kemin Valley.
This beautiful rural area offers a glimpse into traditional Kyrgyz life, with rolling green hills, grazing horses and mountain scenery in every direction.
It’s a great introduction to the country’s landscapes before venturing further into the high-altitude regions.
Spend the night in a guesthouse or homestay and enjoy a slower pace of the countryside.
Days 4-5: Song Kul Lake
Located over 3,000 metres above sea level, this remote alpine lake is surrounded by vast grasslands where nomadic families spend their summers living in traditional yurts.
I stayed at Rima Yurt Camp and it was one of the highlights of my entire Central Asia trip.
Expect incredible sunsets, endless open landscapes and nights spent under some of the clearest skies you’ll ever see.
It’s the kind of place that makes you feel very small in the best possible way.
Days 6-7: Issyk Kul Lake & Skazka Canyon
Next, make your way to Issyk Kul Lake.
Despite being surrounded by mountains, Issyk Kul somehow feels more like the beach than a lake. During summer you’ll find people swimming, sunbathing and relaxing along the shoreline.
While you’re in the area, don’t miss Skazka Canyon, also known as Fairy Tale Canyon.
Its colourful rock formations and winding trails create one of the most unique landscapes in the country and make a great half-day trip from the lake.
Spend a couple of nights here soaking up the scenery and enjoying a slower pace.
Days 8-9: Karakol
Karakol is one of Kyrgyzstan’s adventure capitals and an excellent base for hiking.
The surrounding mountains offer some of the country’s most spectacular scenery, with countless trekking opportunities ranging from easy day hikes to multi-day adventures.
One of my favourite hikes was Kok Jaiyk Valley, which rewarded us with stunning mountain views and endless green landscapes.

- Seven Bulls Rock
- Karakol Gorge
- Ala-Kul Trek
- Hot springs
- Local markets and cafes
If you’re a nature lover, you’ll probably wish you had longer here.
Day 10: Return To Bishkek
Return to Bishkek for your flight home or continue your Central Asia adventure.
Optional Extension: Kazakhstan
If you have a few extra days, I highly recommend crossing the border into Kazakhstan.
From Karakol, travel towards Charyn Canyon National Park, often compared to a miniature Grand Canyon. The hiking and scenery here are spectacular.
From there, continue to Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city, which has easy international flight connections and makes a convenient endpoint for a Central Asia itinerary.
Final Thoughts
Kyrgyzstan is one of those rare destinations that still feels adventurous without being difficult, though I know it’s gotten a lot more popular in recent years.
I don’t think you need to plan every detail months in advance, since some of the best experiences often come from conversations with locals, recommendations from guesthouse owners and spontaneous detours along the way.
If you love mountains, hiking, nature and authentic cultural experiences, Kyrgyzstan deserves a place near the top of your travel bucket list!
