If you’re planning the Ha Giang Loop, one of the biggest decisions you’ll make is whether to ride yourself or book an Easy Rider. While both options follow the same incredible route through northern Vietnam’s mountains, the experience is very different.
I chose to do the loop with an Easy Rider and, honestly, I never once wished I was driving instead. Being able to soak up the scenery, film videos and simply enjoy the ride made it one of my favourite travel experiences to date!
That doesn’t mean self-driving isn’t the right choice for some travellers. If you’re an experienced rider looking for adventure and complete independence, you may love being behind the handlebars.

Short Answer: Easy Rider vs Self-Drive
If you’re an experienced motorbike rider who is confident riding manual bikes on winding mountain roads, self-driving can be an unforgettable adventure.
However, if you’re travelling to enjoy the scenery, want to take photos and videos, or simply don’t have extensive motorbike experience, I’d personally recommend booking an Easy Rider. Having completed the Ha Giang Loop this way myself, I genuinely don’t feel like I missed out on anything.
What Is an Easy Rider?
An Easy Rider means you’ll ride on the back of a motorbike driven by an experienced local guide.
You’ll still complete the same route, stop at all of the viewpoints, stay in the same accommodation and experience everything the Ha Giang Loop is famous for – you’re simply not responsible for driving.
For many travellers, especially solo travellers, it’s the perfect balance between adventure and comfort.

Why I Chose an Easy Rider
My decision was actually pretty simple.
I don’t ride motorbikes, so there was no way these roads would be where I’d learn… I wanted to spend the three days taking in the scenery rather than worrying about staying upright and alive on unfamiliar mountain roads.
As someone who creates travel content, I also knew I’d want to film as much as possible. If I’d been driving, I would have missed so many moments simply because my attention would have needed to stay on the road.
Instead, I spent hours looking out across mountain passes, waving to local children, chatting with my driver and capturing videos that I still love watching back.
Throughout the entire trip, I never once thought, I wish I was driving instead.
Why You Might Choose an Easy Rider
You can actually enjoy the scenery
This was probably the biggest advantage for me.
The landscapes are constantly changing throughout the loop, and there were countless moments where I found myself simply staring out at the mountains. If I’d been driving, my focus would naturally have been on the road instead.
It’s much easier to take photos and videos
Whether you’re travelling solo or creating content, having your hands free is a huge advantage.
I was able to film videos while riding, take photos during scenic sections and simply experience the journey without constantly stopping.
Many of my favourite photos and videos from the trip wouldn’t have been possible if I’d been driving.
You don’t have to worry about navigating
Our guide knew exactly where to stop, where the quieter viewpoints were and how to avoid unnecessary stress.
Rather than thinking about directions or keeping up with traffic, I could simply enjoy the ride.
Rain wasn’t nearly as stressful
We travelled during the rainy season and experienced occasional showers and mist.
While the roads were still manageable, I was grateful not to be the one making riding decisions in changing weather conditions.
Why You Might Choose to Self-Drive
Although I personally chose an Easy Rider, I completely understand why some travellers prefer to drive themselves.
Self-driving may be the better option if you:
- Have solid experience riding manual motorbikes.
- Enjoy the challenge of mountain roads.
- Want complete independence.
For confident riders, completing the Ha Giang Loop yourself can be an incredible achievement!
Things to Consider Before Self-Driving
Before deciding to self-drive, ask yourself a few honest questions.
- Have you ridden manual motorbikes before?
- Are you comfortable riding on winding mountain roads for days on end?
- Would you still enjoy the scenery if most of your attention is on the road?
- Are you comfortable riding in changing weather?
If the answer to several of those questions is “not really,” an Easy Rider may allow you to enjoy the experience much more.
Did I Feel Like I Missed Out?
Not at all.
Watching the mountains roll past, filming the scenery, relaxing between viewpoints and chatting with my driver made the journey feel incredibly immersive. I never felt like I was having a lesser experience – in fact, I think it allowed me to appreciate the Ha Giang Loop even more!
My Recommendation
If you’re already an experienced rider who loves the freedom of being on a motorbike, self-driving could be an unforgettable experience.
But if you’re choosing between the two because you’re unsure whether an Easy Rider is “worth it,” my answer is an easy yes.
For me, it meant I could fully experience one of Vietnam’s most spectacular road trips without the stress of driving. I came home with incredible memories, hundreds of photos and videos, and absolutely no regrets about my decision.
