As someone who grew up in Brisbane, I’m often asked where visitors should stay.
The answer depends entirely on what you’re looking for.
If you’re visiting Brisbane for the first time, South Bank is usually my recommendation. It’s central, walkable and close to many of the city’s major attractions.
But if a friend asked me where I’d personally stay for a long weekend in Brisbane, my answer would be different: James Street.
With its tree-lined streets, boutique hotels, excellent cafes, designer shopping and some of Brisbane’s best restaurants, it feels like the city at its best.
Whether you’re looking for luxury, nightlife, river views or a more local neighbourhood feel, here’s where I’d recommend staying in Brisbane…
| Area | Best For |
|---|---|
| James Street / Fortitude Valley | Luxury, foodies, trendy Brisbane |
| South Bank | First-time visitors |
| Brisbane CBD | Convenience |
| West End | Local neighbourhood feel |
| Fortitude Valley | Nightlife |
| Petrie Terrace | Backpackers & hostels |
I’ve included a summary of accomodation I recommend and direct links to book them at the end of this post!
James Street & Fortitude Valley: My Personal Pick
If a friend asked me where I’d personally stay in Brisbane for a long weekend, this would be my answer.
Centred around James Street, this pocket of Fortitude Valley feels like Brisbane at its best. Think tree-lined streets, boutique hotels, designer shopping, excellent coffee and some of the city’s best restaurants all within easy walking distance.
This is where you’ll find some of my absolute favourite dining options in Brisbane. (I’ve included a little list of recommended eateries at the end of this post too!) Even if you’re not staying here, James Street is somewhere I’d encourage every visitor to spend at least an afternoon exploring.
Accommodation here tends to be on the higher end, with The Calile Hotel being Brisbane’s most iconic luxury stay. If you’re looking for a stylish city break with great food and a lively atmosphere, this is hard to beat.
Best for: Foodies, luxury travellers, couples and return visitors to Brisbane.
South Bank: Best for First-Time Visitors
If it’s your first time visiting Brisbane, South Bank is probably the area I’d recommend.
Located just across the river from the CBD, it’s home to many of Brisbane’s most recognisable attractions, including Streets Beach, the Queensland Museum, QAGOMA and the Brisbane Wheel. The riverfront promenade is beautiful for a morning walk and you’ll have easy access to ferries, public transport and the city centre.
South Bank strikes a nice balance between convenience and atmosphere. It feels more relaxed than the CBD while still being close to everything.
Best for: First-time visitors, families and anyone wanting to be close to Brisbane’s major attractions.
Brisbane CBD: Best for Convenience
If you’re only in Brisbane for a short time or visiting for work, staying in the CBD makes the most sense.
You’ll be close to Central Station, Queen Street Mall, the City Botanic Gardens and the riverfront. It’s also a practical base if you’re planning day trips or have an early flight.
While I personally prefer the atmosphere of South Bank or James Street, the CBD is of course very convenient and offers accommodation options across a range of budgets.
Best for: Business travellers, short stays and visitors prioritising convenience.
West End: Best for a Local Neighbourhood Feel
West End has long been one of Brisbane’s most character-filled neighbourhoods.
Known for its independent cafes, multicultural food scene and creative atmosphere, it’s a great option if you want to experience a different side of the city beyond the main tourist areas.
The area is highly walkable, particularly around Boundary Street, where you’ll find everything from brunch spots and bakeries to bars and bookstores.
While accommodation options are more limited than in South Bank or the CBD, if you’re looking for a more local (while still accessible) experience of Brisbane, I think you’ll love it here!
Best for: Food lovers, longer stays and travellers wanting a more local feel.
Fortitude Valley: Best for Nightlife
If your priority is bars, clubs and late nights, Fortitude Valley is Brisbane’s nightlife hub.
The Valley is packed with bars, live music venues and nightclubs, making it the city’s most energetic area after dark.
That said, if I’m being completely honest, it’s not my favourite area in Brisbane. While there are some fantastic restaurants and cocktail bars nearby, parts of the nightlife scene can feel a little young and chaotic, particularly on weekends.
For most visitors, I’d rather stay near James Street and walk into the Valley when needed.
Best for: Nightlife, live music and younger travellers.
Petrie Terrace: Best for Backpackers
Travelling Brisbane on a budget?
Petrie Terrace is home to several of the city’s most popular hostels and offers easy access to both the CBD and Suncorp Stadium.
It’s a practical choice for backpackers looking to meet other travellers while still being within walking distance of many of Brisbane’s attractions.
Best for: Backpackers and budget-conscious travellers.

Brisbane’s dining scene has grown enormously over the past decade and is one of the most underrated aspects of visiting the city. If you’re a foodie, I’d strongly recommend planning at least a few meals in advance (if not your whole trip around meals heheh).
Final Thoughts
Although I’ve spent years travelling the world, Brisbane will always be home. It’s a city I’ve appreciated more the older I’ve gotten – not because it has world-famous landmarks, but because of its lifestyle, great weather, excellent food scene and easy access to nature.
For first-time visitors, South Bank is hard to beat. But if you asked where I’d spend my own long weekend, I’d book a hotel near James Street every time.
Enjoy your trip to Brisbane! ☀️
